Why is fiber-optic internet superior to cable?
Fiber internet uses ultra-thin strands of glass to transmit data via pulses of light. This is a revolutionary improvement over cable, which uses copper wires and is slower and less reliable.
Fiber internet offers:
Copper is an older technology used for TV and phone lines. Fiber internet is built for the future.

LEARN MOREFiber-optic internet (fiber internet for short) transmits data to and from the internet via pulses of light through thin strands of glass. This leads to a more efficient, more reliable and faster internet connection than cable.
Cable is a legacy technology that uses copper wires to transmit data. Mainly used for television, cable was built to be a one-way connection, which is why it can’t match upload speeds to download speeds. Cable also relies on shared connections, which leads to slower connectivity especially around peak usage times. Fiber, on the other hand, provides ultra-fast symmetrical speeds and reliable connectivity that won’t slow down or go down based on network traffic.
Fiber internet works by transmitting data as pulses of light through thin strands of glass. Your internet experience will function the same way as cable or DSL, but the connection will be faster and more reliable.
Fiber internet is connected to your home or building via utility poles or an underground path. Once connected, a technician will bring the wires inside (sometimes this involves drilling a small hole) and connect it to an ONT. Once your fiber internet connection is turned on, you can connect your devices and set up WiFi. Before leaving, your technician should run a speed test and make sure everything is running properly.
Your technician will install an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is like a modem but for fiber. You’ll need a router and possibly WiFi extenders, depending on the size of your home and your needs.
If you don’t have fiber internet service yet, keep an eye out for updates from your local government officials or construction crews in the area. Check your address to find out if Ziply Fiber services are in your area, and sign up for service updates.
