Fiber internet technology uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) rather than a modem, which is designed for cable. When fiber internet is installed, the technician will hook up the ONT and the compatible router. You may connect your own router to the ONT, as long as it’s compatible with your internet service.
Yes, all fiber internet plans require an ONT. This is included in installation and must be installed by a licensed technician. Learn more about what equipment is needed with your fiber internet service on our blog: What equipment is needed for fiber internet?
WiFi speeds are always slower than wired Ethernet connections. If your connection is noticeably slowing down, try turning off your router or unplugging your WiFi extender for a minute. (Just don’t unplug any cords from the ONT, as that could damage the fiber connection.) Read more about how to improve speed and performance on our blog.
When setting up your internet connection, the router you choose can make or break your online experience.
You’ve got fast fiber internet, but in that one room your signal cuts out and causes glitches and lag. Is there anything more frustrating?
