Ziply Fiber’s marketing team is comprised of many roles, from writers and designers to data analysts and coders. In the middle of this large team is Danielle Leng, a senior manager who sits on the front lines of new and changing products and plans, ensuring the messaging remains consistent across the marketing organization and the entire company.

Interview by Emily Keeler

In a few sentences, tell me about your job.

I lead Ziply Fiber’s message positioning from a marketing perspective: campaigns, go-to-market strategy and content, so it stays in our voice and has consistent messaging. The goal is to shape messaging behind our products in such a way that when customers see our materials out in the world, the value of what we offer feels clear, relevant to their needs and easy to understand. I’ve been with Ziply Fiber since the company started in 2020. We’ve expanded our products and our fiber network and adopted new technology to make the lives of our customers easier, all while staying committed to the idea that the internet should be simple.

How did you end up in this role here?

I got my master’s in library science, and I always thought I was going to go into librarianship. Instead, I stumbled into a marketing career. When I applied to Ziply Fiber, I was looking for something where I could use my degree more. I came in at a coordinator level, and I worked my way up to senior manager.

How is this role using your degree?

Library science studies how information changes our behavior. We study how we react to things. It felt very natural to move into the marketing sector. It’s fun, it’s creative and it’s really a study of people.

What do you like most about your job?

I like the blend of strategy and creativity that comes from working in a marketing field. You get to take something from conception to launch, where people see it and respond to it.

What does a typical day look like for you?

The baby wakes up first, then the toddler, then the dog. We all troop out the door and go our separate ways before I finally sit down to start my day. Every day is a little different, which keeps the work fun and fresh. In my role, I collaborate with the product and IT teams a lot. First, I’ll typically be briefed on something that needs a solution, or maybe a new product. Then I move into a discovery phase—what content already exists, and does it need to be reworked. I map out a plan and support materials, whether that’s an internal bulletin, training materials, customer materials or technical guides. Next, I teach the care and sales team. I’m sort of a middle woman between departments.

What’s your coffee order?

If I go to a full cafe, it would be a latte with one pump hazelnut and one pump Irish cream. I will try any special of the week. I’m sure that was one that existed between college and now and it became my all-time favorite. If they don’t have my favorite syrups, I just go for a basic hazelnut latte. I guess caramel is ok. I just go down the line of flavors. I’ll still order coffee—don’t get me wrong. Coffee is a must.

What do you do after work?

I’m a big reader. If I’m solo, I’m probably sitting down with a book. If I’m with the kids, we love to get out of the house and explore. We’ll go to local bookstores, antique shops and get a sweet treat. Those would be my favorite activities.
