You’ve got Ziply Fiber running to your house: super-fast, symmetrical speeds, the whole deal. But there’s a thing a lot of people don’t realize. The speed you actually feel in your day-to-day life depends just as much on your router as it does on your internet plan. A great fiber internet connection paired with a tired old router is like putting premium fuel in a car with a clogged fuel filter. In other words, let’s talk routers.

Why your router matters more with fiber internet

With older types of internet, your connection speed was usually the bottleneck. No router was going to make a slow line faster. Fiber internet flips that script. Once you’ve got gigabit (or multi-gig) speeds coming into your house, your router becomes the thing standing between on paper speed and what you actually experience on your laptop, phone or smart TV.

An older or budget router can throttle you in ways that are easy to miss: a single WiFi band getting overloaded on movie night, a router that can’t keep up with a collection of connected devices or Ethernet ports that cap out at speeds well below what you’re paying for. Upgrading your router is one of the easiest ways to make sure you’re getting the full value of your fiber internet plan.

Option 1: Using the WiFi 7 router Ziply Fiber offers

The simplest path is also a genuinely good one. When you sign up for one of Ziply Fiber’s most popular speed tiers, we provide a state-of-the-art WiFi 7 router built to handle the speeds our network delivers. Security comes standard, too. WPA3 encryption keeps your data better protected, and the companion app lets you see exactly who’s on your network, set-up a guest network for visitors and manage passwords, privacy and parental settings right from your phone. The WiFi 7 router is supported by our technical team.

If you want to set it and forget it, this is the way to go. You won’t need to shop, compare specs or troubleshoot firmware updates on your own. If your home is small to mid-sized and you’re not chasing a specific feature (like a mesh system covering a sprawling floor plan, or advanced parental controls), our WiFi 7 router will easily get the job done.

Option 2: Use your own router

If you’re the type of person who likes more control, you can absolutely use your own router with Ziply Fiber. A few things to keep in mind if you go this route:

  • Look for WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E, at minimum. These newer standards handle multiple connected devices (phones, laptops, smart speakers, video doorbells, the works) far better than older WiFi 5 routers, and they’re built to take advantage of faster speeds. WiFi 7 is the current generation of high performance for WiFi.
  • Check the port speeds. If you’re on one of our fastest fiber tiers, make sure your router has a multi-gig Ethernet port (2.5G or higher). A router that only has gigabit ports will cap your wired speeds, even if your plan supports more.
  • Consider a mesh system for bigger homes. If you have multiple floors, thick walls or dead zones, a mesh WiFi system (multiple small units working together) will give you more even coverage than a single router working overtime in one corner of the house.
  • Popular, reliable picks include router and mesh systems from eero, TP-Link (including WiFi 7 models), Netgear Orbi and ASUS. Any of these, properly set up, will pair nicely with a Ziply Fiber connection.

Just note: If you use your own router, our support team can help troubleshoot the fiber connection itself, but router-specific setup and settings are your responsibility (or the router manufacturer’s support team).

A few setup tips, either way

  • Place your router centrally, off the floor and away from thick walls or metal appliances that can block the signal.
  • Restart it occasionally. A quick restart every so often to refresh the connection and clear out the router cache.
  • Keep firmware updated. Most modern routers (including ours) update automatically, but it’s worth double-checking if you’re using your own hardware.
  • Separate your smart home devices onto a guest network or dedicated band if your router supports it. It keeps your main network snappier for streaming and video calls.
  • Run a speed test after setup to confirm you’re getting close to the speeds on your plan. If something looks off, that’s a good sign to check your router’s placement or settings.

So, which should you choose?

If you want the easiest possible setup with support built in, stick with the WiFi 7 router we provide. It’s a solid, no-fuss choice for most households. If you’re a bit more hands on or have a larger home, using your own WiFi 6/6E (or WiFi 7) router or mesh system is a great way to get the most out of your fiber speeds.

Either way, the Ziply Fiber line running to your home is the same: fast, reliable and ready for whatever you throw at it.
