If you or someone you know is deaf, hard of hearing or has difficulty speaking, Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) is a free service that provides a specially trained communications assistant (CA) to help relay your conversation in real time.
This free service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
If you have a hearing or speech disability
- Connect your TTY (Text Telephone) or communication device.
Or use a TRS-supported app or service, if you prefer. - Dial 711 on your device.
- Wait for the communications assistant (CA) to answer. They’ll introduce themselves and ask how they can help.
- Tell the CA the number you want to call.
- Start your conversation.
- You type or speak to the CA, and they relay your words to the other person.
- The CA will also type back what the other person says, so you can follow along.
If you’re calling someone who uses TRS
- Dial 711 from your phone. No special equipment or apps are needed on your end.
- Tell the CA that you’re trying to reach a TRS user. Provide the phone number of the TRS user.
- The CA will connect you and relay the conversation.
Long distance calling
While TRS is a free service, standard long-distance rates apply if using the service for a long-distance call.
